Going Beyond Compliance

Many sole traders think they “just need someone to do the return.” And yes — we’ll do that. But we’ll also show you how to reduce your tax bill (legally), plan for the future, and build better business habits. If you ever decide to scale, go limited, or add new income streams, we’re ready to support that too.

FAQs

  • 1. When do I need to register as self-employed?

You need to register with HMRC by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which you started trading. So if you started in, say, June 2026, the deadline is 5 October 2027. If your trading income is £1,000 or less a year, you may not need to register at all. We can handle the registration for you and make sure you start off on the right foot.

  • 2. What expenses can I claim as a sole trader?

You can usually claim costs that are wholly and exclusively for your business, such as equipment, software, travel, phone bills, professional fees, and a share of your home costs if you work from home. We'll make sure you claim everything you're entitled to, and nothing that could cause problems with HMRC.

  • 3. Does Making Tax Digital for Income Tax apply to me?

From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC. The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027, with more people brought in after that. We'll check whether and when it applies to you, set you up with the right software and handle the submissions.

  • 4. Should I stay a sole trader or set up a limited company?

It depends on your profits, your plans and how much admin you're happy with. At higher profit levels, a limited company can be more tax-efficient and protects your personal assets. We'll run the numbers for you in your annual planning session and tell you honestly when the time is right to make the switch.

  • 5. What happens in the planning session?

Every year, between September and March, we sit down with you to review how your business is doing, estimate your next tax bill and plan for the year ahead. It's your chance to ask questions, make decisions before the tax year ends and avoid surprises in January.
